Lazarus and the rich glutton

On the north side of the capital the rich man (DIVES) and his wife sit behind the table at which they feast sumptuously; two dogs lie before the table. To the left of the lady a male figure, presumably Lazarus, is standing with his pilgrim’s staff or crutch (next to him the letters […]ER can be made out, perhaps the final two letters of pauper "poor"). On the right side of the capital Lazarus (LAZARVS) lies on the ground before the house; the dogs lick his sores.
On the west and east sides the death of the rich man and that of Lazarus are contrasted. On the east side the wife of the rich man can be recognized; she holds the head of her husband, while a devil seizes his soul. The divided syllables can be reconstructed in different ways. DI – on the console block – and ANI[M]A EI could spell out either: dives “the rich man” and “his soul”, or divitis anima ei, “the soul of the rich man to this one” (the devil). On the west side the small soul of Lazarus escapes from his body; it is caught by one angel and blessed by another.
On the south side Abraham receives the soul of Lazarus (ABRAH/AM; the letter T perhaps stands for tenet, “holds”). On the right side a devil holds the soul of the rich glutton, who turns to Abraham, just as described in the text of the parable (Lk 16:19-30).
The top of the impost block bears an inscription with the first two verses of Psalm 54: D[EV]S IN NOMINE TVO SA[L]VVM / ME FAC ET IN VIRTV /TE TVA IVDICA ME; D[EV]S [E]XSAVDI ORACIONEM [MEAM]: “Save me, O God, by thy name, and vindicate me by thy might. Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.” A frieze of angels runs round the bevelled impost. This motif is derived from the impost of a round column in the ambulatory of the choir in Saint-Sernin in Toulouse.
