Dragons and human heads
As in capital E11MS29, four monsters with serpent-like bodies, birds’ wings and necks, and animal heads with sharp teeth are arranged round the calathos of the capital. Their supple bodies each take up a half of each side. The ends of their wings lie closely together at the base of the console block. Their heads are nestled closely together in the corners. Their talon-like claws surround the head of a single human figure, which appears below the wide-open maws of the monsters. The motif is more or less expanded, depending on whether it is located on the broader or narrower sides of the capital.
In spite of the very decorative treatment of the motif, the deeper meaning of the iconography, the reference to the tortures that await the sinner in hell, is no less clear in this capital than in others.
