Baptism of Christ

The composition of this group of capitals is striking for its great visual clarity. At the centre of the main viewing side Christ is standing deep in the wavy waters of Jordan. The Holy Ghost in the form of a dove floats over his cruciform halo. The Baptist stands to the left of Christ. He is dressed in the long toga-like garments typical of the apostles. He lays his hands on Christ’s head and breast. To the right and left of this central group two figures are standing; one of them holds a folded, the other an outspread cloth. On the narrow south side another angel approaches the corner; he holds a processional cross in one hand, and raises his other in the gesture of blessing. On the opposite side an angel in much the same posture holds up a small cross (?) and with his outstretched index finger pointing upwards transmits God’s word: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Mt 3:13-17).
The other key episode from the life of the Baptist, namely his death, is recounted in the scenes on the capital in the west corner of the same gallery (S01MS01).
The scrolled decoration of the frieze of the impost block is based on a quite common motif, though here expressed in its most accomplished form: paired sideways-turned palmettes are placed in medallions framed by a double tendril.
