Last supper

Christ with cruciform nimbus is sitting on the main viewing side of the capital. He is accompanied with the apostles at table, which is covered with a tablecloth and set with dishes, cutlery and bread. Peter is sitting at the right side of Christ, while on the opposite side sits the beardless John; he bends forward and lays his head in the Lord’s lap (Jn 13:25).
Some of these nine figures behind the table are very poorly preserved.
Judas, crouching in front of the table, is separated from the group of the disciples. His betrayal has already been heralded by Christ; it is reported in all four Gospels (Mt 26:23, Mk 14:17, Lk 22:21, Jn 23:26). The figure of Judas forms a compositional counterweight to Christ, who is not placed in the exact centre of this side of the capital and thus forms no symmetrical axis.
The four different scenes of the capitals on the north-west pillar form a narrative sequence in a similar way as the capitals on the south-west corner pillar and can be separated into two groups (Washing of the Feet– Last Supper and Council of the High Priests – Betrayal). The Last Supper is thus celebrated with Evening Mass on Holy Thursday. The crucifixion and death of Christ are commemorated on Good Friday; Christ’s burial, on Holy Saturday; while the Resurrection is celebrated with Vespers on Easter Sunday.
