Christ Entrusts his Mission to the Apostles

The representation of Christ with his apostles presents an image of the victorious Church.
This capital is very poorly preserved due to the erosion of the stone and the loss of material, and this prevents a precise identification of the eleven men distributed between the four sides of the capital. Period photographs from the 1960s, however, show two further figures on its now almost wholly destroyed north side, so that the group can be increased in number to thirteen figures. It is possible therefore that the four sides of the capital showed Christ with the twelve apostles (Judas already replaced by Matthew). The scene would therefore represent the moment in which the risen Christ gives his last instructions to his disciples at the end of the canonical Gospels and charges them with the task of evangelization.
The figures have haloes and are clad in long garments. They are barefoot and their feet overlap each other. All stand upright; they turn in part towards each other. This somewhat static composition is alleviated by their lively gestures and different postures, which express a discussion among the apostles.
