Apostles at Christ’s Ascension

All three sides of the capital on the south-east bundled pillar of the cloister show the apostles in profile, standing behind one another and looking up to heaven. Only the beardless disciple (John) on the north-east corner is turned in the opposite direction and thus towards the others.
The apostles turn their eyes upwards to the scene that represents the Ascension of Christ in the relief placed in the upper half of the capital.
The account in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 1:9-10) mentions a cloud that takes Christ out of their sight and two men in white robes, who speak to the apostles. In the relief, these two figures that flank Christ in smaller proportions are interpreted as angels – as heavenly beings who receive the Messiah as King of Glory.
