Unicorns

Two unicorns, both with long backwards-bent horns, are advancing towards each other. The fur of both animals is streaked with tuft-like strands. The bowl of the capital is decorated with a pattern of large acanthus leaves, their ribs articulated with bead ornament.
Like the east side of the pillar (S12PP40, Daniel in the Lions’ Den), this relief too alludes to Psalm 22 (“Save me from the mouth of the lion, my afflicted soul from the horns of the wild oxen [unicorns]”) and its interpretation in the Commentary of Augustine of Hippo, who emphasizes the pride of unicorns.
In this respect the analogy with Daniel could here too be interpreted as an admonition to the canons to beware of the sin of pride.
