Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane
The capital with the representation of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane is severely damaged and only with difficulty can the figures be distinguished.
The scene can however be identified as the Garden of Olives through the sleeping disciples and the vegetation.
Three apostles are placed on the north side of the capital (Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, James and John, as described in Mt 26:37), while five others can be seen together with Christ on the following side. The eight disciples seem to be sleeping, since they are not standing upright but slumped against each other and three of them have their eyes shut.
The poor conservation of the relief only permits us to assume that there were seven further figures, and that one of them could be Christ. In that case he would be twice represented and the scene would correspond to Christ’s second approach to the sleeping disciples, as recounted in Holy Scripture (Mt 26:43) as an example of watchfulness and patience.
