Capital with year of foundation

This capital is decorated with a lush-luxuriant leaf motif and a rotated-turned string of jewels over the edge of the calathos. It also contains an inscription on the abacus, which relates to the date of the reform of the chapter and the conferral of the collegiate foundation to the Augustinian canons by Pope innocent II in 1133 – by modern reckoning, 1132.

Beginning on the north side, the inscription reads as follows:
ANNO AB INCARNA (north side) / TIONE DNI MCXXXIII (west side) / IN HOC CLAUSTRO REGULARIS (south side) / VITA INCEPTA EST (east side).

On stylistic grounds in regard to the capital sculpture, though, some scholars have conjectured that the inscription does not refer to the dating of the capitals but should be understood merely as the historical date and indication of the official commencement of monastic life under the first bishop Aribertus (1132-1139).

Placement marks in the form of an U are found on the south side of the column on both the base and the shaft just under the projecting ring that separates the shaft from the capital as well as on the abacus of the capital itself and the impost block. Although they do not belong to the original construction, they could date from later structural alterations.
