Acanthus foliations
The calathos is ornamented with a single row of leaves, whose variations have already been remarked on in other capitals. The composition on the narrower sides of the double capital takes as its starting point a split leaf at the corners: the central spine running through the leaf is split into two; both halves of the leaf enclose a further leaf between them. The same pattern is repeated in the corners and centre of the broader sides.
The impost block is decorated with a triple fish-scale pattern. The bevelled impost frieze below consists of a row of palmettes set in heart-shaped medallions defined by the tendrils. Between the two central medaillons on the broader sides the tendrils are interlaced, more falteringly on the north, more elegantly on the south side.
