Foliate ornament

A single garland of leaves is uniformly arranged on the narrower and broader side of this double capital, with foliations under the console block and in the corners. The foliations are surrounded by symmetrically undulating tendrils forming heart-shaped medallions above the annulet, each containing a palmette; higher up the tendrils form smaller oval compartments containing sideways-turned palmettes. These palmettes are each bordered on the corners by a vertical stalk. In the middle axis of the broader sides two stalks spring from the annulet and form an upside-down V. These geometrical motifs contrast with the prescribed forms of the foliations and their undulating rhythm. Above two are located at the base of the console block. Two leaves with elongates lobes and deep veins stretch upwards and take the place of the arms of volutes, while the volutes themselves seem to be sprouting from a further shoot, as on capitals S07MS07 or E18MS36; a similar motif is also found on capitals E16MS34 and N07MS45. This is a further astonishing example of how a novel motif is developed from the standard repertoire of foliated capitals of this kind.
The impost block is decorated with a fish-scale pattern of overlapping circles and a double and regular nodal ornament.
