Story of Saint Ursus
The story of Saint Ursus himself is the theme of this large and distinctive cloister capital, whose calathos is decorated with scenes that follow the format of a relief frieze.
One of the encircling inscriptions on the bevelled abacus describes the scenes represented below:
ECCE DOMINI SACRAMENTUM QUIA FALLERE NON TIMUISTI DEMONIIS ES PREDA MISER QUIA SIC MERUISTI PRESULIS EXEMPLO SUBEANT NIGRA TARTARA LUSI QUI NOS IMPUGNANT CECA FORMIDINE FUSI
(Here is the word of God; that since you had no fear to defraud, unfortunate one, you now deserve to be the prey of demons. This bishop is an example that those who support the darkness of Hell, which wages battle against us, are tricked or are driven by a mad illusion.)
The single scenes and figures are also accompanied by separate inscriptions:
S. URSUS ET PAUPERES - Saint Ursus comforts the poor (east side);
S. URSUS ECCLESIA FONS - Saint Ursus digs a well (of Busseyaz?) (north-east side);
ARMIGER EPISCOPALI ERRANS CUM PALAFREDO - Ursus and Bishop Ploceano on horseback (north side);
S. URSUS ROGANS PRO ARMERIGO EPISCOPUM PLOCEANUM - Ursus intercede with Bishop Ploceano for the injustice of a suspicious stable boy (north-west side);
HIC IUGULATUR EPISCOPUS – torture of the stable boy (south side);
DIABOLI CORVI – death of the Bishop Ploceano, whose soul becomes the prize of ravens and devils (south-east side).
